Course overview

Every day is different for healthcare employees because they never know what challenges they’ll face. But it’s rewarding, as they’re able to help and support people when they need it. Often these people will be at their most vulnerable when they work with them, so also have a duty to protect them, and their Protected Health information, or PHI.

Under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA for short, patients have certain rights. And it’s part of the job of healthcare professionals to make sure these rights are observed, and patients are treated fairly. They also need to know how to handle situations where patients, or their families, want access to information. And that’s where this course will help.

What's covered

Patients' rights around PHI, including the Right of Access

How requests for access must be handled, and when access can be denied

Explaining patient rights to patients, their families, or parents of child patients

Why your teams need this course

Healthcare employees need to be advocates for the people they’re looking after and stay HIPAA compliant. That’s why it’s vital for them to understand what they can and can’t do regarding the rights of patients. This course will educate your employees on the rights that patients have and how to explain them to patients and their families. It will also provide them with useful advice about handling requests for access to PHI.
